RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENSTRUAL CYCLE AND SLEEP QUALITY: INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Keywords: Sex hormones, Menstruation, Sleep

Abstract

Introduction: during the premenstrual period, the drop in estrogen and progesterone levels can cause sleep disturbances, such as insomnia and fatigue. Objective: this study sought to analyze, through an integrative literature review in databases such as SciELO, LILACS, PubMed, and PePSIC, the relationship between the menstrual cycle and women's sleep quality. Results: twenty-two articles were used, revealing that women have a 41% higher risk of developing insomnia compared to men. In addition to hormonal fluctuations, social factors—such as professional and domestic responsibilities—also affect sleep. Conclusion: the scarcity of studies in this area reinforces the need for more research. Understanding this relationship is essential for creating strategies that reduce the negative impacts of the menstrual cycle on physical and emotional health, promoting well-being and greater productivity in women's daily lives.
