ABORDAGENS EPISTEMOLÓGICAS EM PUBLICAÇÕES SOBRE ALFABETIZAÇÃO FINANCEIRA
Abstract
The present work aimed to realize an epistemological reflection on the most relevant articles in Financial Literacy. After a thorough analysis of the studies with more than 100 citations on the topic, it was possible to classify them according to the epistemological paradigms proposed by Burrel and Morgan (1979). Results indicated that more than 90% of the studies adopted the functionalist approach, focusing on quantitative methods and seeking to generalize the findings. This concentration reveals the existence of a mainstream approach in financial literacy research. The absence of a methodological pluralism can limit the understanding of the phenomenon and, consequently, the development of the modern Finance Theory. A practical effect of this limited understanding of Financial Literacy may be the design of financial education policies that are inefficient or have unsatisfactory results.
