Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate if exploring a website on nurses’ roles would affect social representations of adolescents on Nursing. This is a survey type exploratory study with a qualitative approach applying Moscovici’s Social Representation Theory as a conceptual framework in three phases: Social representation analysis of Nursing by high school seniors; Creation and construction of a website exploring nurses´ career venues; Social representation analysis of students after exploring the site. In Phase I, adolescents associate nurses with the doctor's aid and working solely in hospitals.  Phase II: 89 nurses were shown through testimonies and photos, divided into seven major working fields on a website called DESCUBRAENFERMAGEM! (www.expertu.com.br/ligia). Phase III: "Now" they associate nurses with the image of a physician, "performing doctor’s roles", prescribing and coordinating.  Nursing can be an autonomous profession. They associate actions such as coordination, clinical assessment, diagnosis and nursing interventions as attributes of independence and knowledge. They are surprised nurses do consultations and work independently. The communication of a new image of nurses based on real life descriptions of their work through the internet as mediation affected adolescents’ social representation.
