Abstract

The aim of this study was to understand the transformations into the concept of care to future nurses during undergraduate course. This is a qualitative research under Martin Heidegger’s existential phenomenology referential. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 recently graduated nurses. All of them had six months to three years’ work experience, and graduated from Londrina State University integrated curriculum nursing course. Data were collected from May to November 2011. Results were organized into three ontic-ontological unifications linked to the movement of becoming a caregiver nurse.  The first unification approaches the beginning of undergraduate course and its introduction to care. The second relates to learning care in the formation process, and the third concerns the end of the course and the projections towards professional life. It was concluded it is necessary to intensify education actions funded in human existence during nursing course. That way, the student is able to be understood as an individual in development who needs to find its own references and meanings to become an authentic caregiver.
