Abstract

By working with families, we have noticed gaps in the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) taxonomy to identify nursing diagnosis specific to this care unit. We aimed at analyzing the Impaired Family Verbal Communication nursing diagnosis. We developed a descriptive research, from January to June 2006, in the medical clinic of a large-sized hospital in Mid-western Brazil. For this study, we followed families with one of their members hospitalized to treat non-communicable chronic illnesses. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, based on Calgary Family Intervention Model, focusing on the “Functioning” axis. 12 families that met the inclusion criteria participated in this study. We Identified the Impaired Family Verbal Communication nursing diagnosis in nine of them. The most frequently observed related factor was psychological barriers (lack of stimuli, lack of model) and the most notable evidence was the difficulty to achieve the expected standard of interpersonal communication within the family context. We noticed that within the families that participated in this study, communication occurred superficially, in a generation to generation cycle. Thus, we propose a new nursing diagnosis to be developed for the inclusion in NANDA’s taxonomy.
