“THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD”

CHILDHOOD SCHOOLING IN THE FRANCESCO TONUCCI CARTOONS

Abstract

The objective of this article consists in analyze the scolarization process from children in pre-school by means of the cartoons of the italian pedagogue and drawer Francesco Tonucci, that compose the work “With child eyes”, originally published in 1988. The analysis highlight the childs look in their relations with teachers and the school environment. The work emphasizes the creation process of the cartoons, from the authors’ intentions in the conception of materials to the choice of verbal and non-verbal elements that will constitute the books. In order to examine the cartoons we employ a methodology perspective that involved the following semiotics stages: selection of pictures, denotative inventory and the highest levels of the images signification. It is observed that the imagetic language, used in the confection of Tonucci’s cartoons, offers a communicative power when producing effects that go beyond the period of creation. Tonucci’s cartoons signal the teaching methodologies weakness used in Children’s Education, which, by not consulting the children about their points of view, neglect the cultural productions, authorship and subjectivities, reinforcing the separation and conflicts between Teachers and children during their school interactions.
