A EDUCATION AT THE DAWN OF MODERNITY
THE PEDAGOGICAL PROJECT OF ERASM ROTTERDAM
Abstract
This article aims to understand the views of the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam on the education of children. To this end, this text starts from the analysis of two important educational works by the referred philosopher, De Pueris (The Boys) and De Civilitate Morum Puerilium (“The Pueril Civility”). It aims to discuss the importance given by the author to children's education for the formation of modern, civilized, rational man; the Erasmus educational methods that should be used by parents and preceptors in this is venture, and finally, to understand how corporal discipline, in Erasmus's view, would contribute to the success of this pedagogical project, which aimed at the constitution of a new humanity.
