Whats is a fair school?
Notes from François Dubet
Abstract
How does equal opportunity become a mechanism to perpetuate school inequalities? Is the idea of equal opportunity not more illusory than real? What is the experience and place of those on the fringes in the educational system? In trying to explain the mechanisms that generate school inequality, while inciting the debate about how the school contributes to reproduce – and not to determine – the social structure with its specific processes and its particular organization, Dubet wants to show that the the school space is not neutral, much less fair, or even a promoter of equal opportunities, but it inserts a fundamental component for us to understand the modus operandi of the school institution today as a sign of competitiveness and, consequently, of violence. The objective of this paper, from the analysis of François Dubet, is to think about the place of the school in the debate about not only the promotion of equality, but also – and mainly – in the fight against inequalities. Last but not least, the central question we want to raise here is how to guarantee quality education for all, in increasingly heterogeneous environments, and even more within an increasingly weakened system, namely, our current system educational.
