<b>The universal symbolism of the icon</b> - doi: 10.4025/imagenseduc.v1i3.14920
Abstract
The significance of the icon has changed throughout the centuries. Transformation depended mainly on the geographical place where the images were made and on the influence of the Western and Eastern churches, with variations in the meaning and in symbolism in each case. Certain elements of iconography from the early Christian art, through the catacomb images, the sarcophagi and the early icons, will be analyzed by the historical and critical method. The eclecticism of the different styles, united hegemonically in the sole aim of praising God, will be investigated. Icon development throughout time and through cultures in fact reached the category of the universal and ecumenical symbol for all peoples who would like to participate in the history of salvation.Downloads
