Assessment of Environmental Impacts in the Urban Watersheds of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Using the Verah Method
Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the environmental impacts on urban watersheds of the Olhos d’Ãgua, Fontes, Lava-Pés, Sangradouro, Renato, and Junco streams in the municipality of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, located within the Paraguay River basin, using the VERAH method (Vegetation, Erosion, Waste, Water, and Housing). The research was developed in three main stages: bibliographic and cartographic survey; delimitation of watersheds based on digital terrain models, with complementary use of satellite imagery, and the creation of thematic maps of land use and occupation; and analysis of environmental impacts based on the axes proposed by the method, with field observations and photographic records. The results showed compromised Permanent Preservation Areas, fragmentation of riparian vegetation, occurrence of marginal erosion processes, accumulation and irregular disposal of solid waste, alterations in water quality, and irregular occupation of the banks of watercourses. Furthermore, insufficient basic sanitation infrastructure was found in sections of the analyzed river basins. A summary table was prepared outlining the main impacts identified, supporting proposals aimed at environmental planning and the management of urban drainage systems.
