Vitimização múltipla feminina ao longo da vida: Estratégias de coping

Abstract

Research suggests the existence of a relationship between multiple victimization and greater symptomatology complexity. However, some women exposed to cumulative adversity do not develop psychological adjustment issues. With that in mind, this study aimed to identify women’s coping strategies to deal with lifetime multiple victimization. For such a purpose, thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with women, focusing on their life stories. The content of the interviews was subjected to thematic analysis. Results revealed that these women used diverse and spontaneous coping strategies. In addition, these coping strategies are heterogeneous and can be labeled as active (e.g., problem solving, self-confidence, search for social support). Moreover, women with and without depressive symptoms mostly report problem-focused coping strategies in face of victimization. In conclusion, results reinforce the need, regarding support processes, to identify and promote coping mechanisms spontaneously activated by the victims in order to favor their psychological adjustment.

Sónia Caridade, Faculdade de Ciências Humanas e Sociais, Universidade Fernando Pessoa

Licenciada e doutorada em Psicologia da Justiça pela Universidade do Minho, é Professora Auxiliar da Faculdade de Ciências Humanas e Sociais, na Universidade Fernando Pessoa (UFP); Co-coordenadora da Unidade de Psicologia Forense da Clínica Pedagógica de Psicologia da UFP, desempenhando funções ao nível da intervenção e avaliação psicológica forenses com vítimas adultas de crimes; no domínio da investigação, tem-se dedicado a analisar a violência nas relações de intimidade juvenil, colaborando ainda em outros projectos de investigação neste âmbito; integra ainda a equipa de investigadores do Observatório Permanente Violência e Crime da UFP; é autora de diversas publicações, nacionais e internacionais, na área da Psicologia Jurídica.

Carla Antunes, Universidade Lusófona

Doutorada em Psicologia da Justiça pela Universidade do Minho, com licenciatura na mesma área de conhecimento pela Universidade do Minho. É Professora auxiliar na Faculdade de Psicologia da Universidade Lusófona do Porto. Do seu percurso profissional, salienta-se ainda o exercício de funções no âmbito da avaliação forense, da intervenção psicológica com vítimas, e da formação a peritos em avaliação psicológica forense desde 2001. No domínio da investigação, tem-se dedicado à área da Vitimologia e, mais especificamente, ao impacto associado às experiências de vitimação. É autora de publicações na área da Psicologia da Justiça, destacando-se publicações nos domínios da avaliação psicológica forense e do abuso sexual de crianças e jovens.

Marlene Matos, Escola de Psicologia, Universidade do Minho

Doutorada em Psicologia, especialização em Psicologia da Justiça, pela Universidade do Minho. É Professora Auxiliar da Escola de Psicologia, Universidade do Minho, desde 2006. Tem trabalhado as questões da violência doméstica no âmbito da investigação e docência. Tem orientado diversas teses de Mestrado e Doutoramento no domínio da Vitimologia, especialmente na área da Violência doméstica. É investigadora responsável do projeto em curso “Vitimação Múltipla de mulheres socialmente excluídas”, financiado pela FCT. Foi ainda investigadora responsável dos seguintes projetos: "Stalking em Portugal: Prevalência, impacto e intervenção" (PIHM/VG/0090/2008); GAM - Grupos de ajuda Mútua, dirigido a mulheres vítimas de violência. Entre 2006 e 2012 foi Coordenadora da Unidade de Psicologia da Justiça do Serviço de Psicologia da Universidade do Minho, unidade especializada na avaliação psicológica forense e na intervenção psicoterapêutica em vítimas e agressores. É ainda revisora das revistas científicas Violence & Victims e da Psychotherapy Research.
