Abstract

This work starts through the study of neoliberal adjustments, where private institutions were encouraged
to enter in a field where public institutions prevailed: education. Summing up to this discussion the role of
distance education modality that has been consolidated in the Brazilian and the whole world. Given this
overview, it is proposed to reflect whether institutions of higher education in Brazil, public and private,
have incorporated the distance education as an alternative to promote access to higher education. The
research is branded as literature although typically not conclusive and based on the bibliographic review
and the presentation and interpretation of data from the Higher Education Census 2011.
