Abstract

This article was the result of a study on the Lancasterian Method
as applied in nineteenth-century England and included into
Brazilian education legislation in 1827, bringing schools to girls in
Brazil. Research included the Lancasterian Method as applied at
girls' schools in London and public policy found in the Brazilian
legislation, analyzing the differences between the two societies.
The study approached some categories peculiar to Brazil and
England, such as: the political moment, socioeconomic locus,
encouragement of female enrollment, as well as gender
differentiation in: the school curriculum, requirement of female
teachers, and socio-political occupations of men and women. The
research was built using the inductive method.
