Abstract

The goal of this work is to discuss, from an Economic history perspective, the acquisition and provenance of school desks destined to public schools in the second half of the 19th century (1854-1895). The main sources of investigation were the correspondences exchanged within the scope of Public Administration. Besides a school object, it is an industrial artifact as well, showing that the school history and configuration are not defined only inside it. As a result, it demonstrates the relationship between State, economy and creation of the physical conditions for operation of the public school, in São Paulo, during the considered period.
