Abstract

Evaluation of the physical-chemical and biological treatment of residue from dyes produced at a microbiology laboratory. The different types of waste produced by man in several areas represent a serious environmental problem when incorrectly discharged. This work carried out degradation experiments of dye waste generated at the laboratory of microbiology of the Federal University of Technology - Paraná State, Campus Curitiba. Assays were performed through liquid culture implemented with Pleurotus sajor-caju and advanced oxidative process (AOP - System UV/H2O2). Efficiency verification of these processes was carried out through monitoring color removal and aromatic compounds by spectrophotometric analysis (UV-vis), and also by controlling the reduction of organic matter (Chemical Oxigen Demand analysis), as well as by performing toxicity bioassays with Escherichia coli and seeds of Lactuca sativa. Results indicated that the combined process - liquid culture followed by peroxidation with ultraviolet radiation, proved to be the most effective treatment for color removal (90-95%) and degradation of aromatic compounds (16-20%). Bioassays showed that the raw dye waste samples did not inhibit E. coli growth, but showed potential toxicity to the species of L. sativa, inhibiting seeds germination by 30 to 57%.
