A Brazilian (from Paraná State) kaolin was pretreated by using a thermal activation process and further, utilized in the synthesis of a zeolite. The natural and pretreated samples were characterized on the basis of Atomic Absorption and Infrared (IR) spectroscopic data, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and textural analysis by N2 adsorption. The IR and XRD data of samples submitted to thermal treatment at 1073K showed destruction, suggesting its transformation into metakaolin. The destruction of kaolin structure turns the present atoms of Si and Al more accessible and appropriated for the use in zeolite synthesis. An A zeolite with 66% of crystalline character was synthesized from the kaolin pretreated.Downloads
