Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between several features of urban form and travel behavior in a mid-size Brazilian city, using modal choice models that consider walking and private automobile as the means of transportation. In order to evaluate the marginal influence of urban form variables on modal choice, two logit-type models were calibrated. The first model (basic) includes only a socioeconomic variable (automobile availability) and the trip length. The second model (expanded) includes, in addition to the variables of the basic model, information on the characteristics of urban form in the areas of trip origin. As expected, the models suggest that a greater diversity of soil uses and better permeability in the areas of trip origin increase the probability of foot travel. On the other hand, occupation density in the area of trip origin showed no significant effect over the choice for walking.
