<b>‘Dead Words’: translated literature against the social systems of domination<b>

Resumo

 Since the margin is not generally given the chance to speak and since such important issues should be tackled with sensibility, the discarded discursive modulations will be discussed. Milton Hatoum’s literary treatments of Western discourses of progress and development in The Brothers (2002), and its potentialization in John Gledson’s translation of the novel will be mainly analyzed. The concepts of social hierarchy and degrees of social inferiority are a deeply rooted issue in Brazil´s colonial heritage. Similarly, the future of Brazilians who have been deeply marginalized cannot avoid the scars of the past. They are doomed to have their freedom limited to dead words.

Davi Silva Gonçalves, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina
Possui Licenciatura em Letras Inglês e Literaturas Correspondentes pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá (2010), e Bacharelado em Tradução em Língua Inglesa pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá (2011). Atualmente é mestrando na área de Teoria e Crítica Literária e Cultural do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Língua Inglesa da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2012), tradutor voluntário para a Universidade do Arizona, EUA (2011) e para a OSHO International Foundation, Zurich, Switzerland (2012) e atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: estudos interseccionais, literatura traduzida, estudos culturais e literatura comparada.
