INTERDISCIPLINARY USE OF NATURAL ACID-BASE INDICATOR IN INVESTIGATIVE SCIENCE CLASSES

Abstract

The disciplines of Science, Chemistry, and Biology present a massive theoretical framework, often laden with complex and abstract terms. In addition, purely expository classes can demotivate student learning. In this sense, aiming to facilitate learning and make classes more creative and dynamic, this article proposes an interdisciplinary investigative approach for elementary and high school students. It addresses topics related to acids and bases and energy metabolism (lactic fermentation of bacteria) using natural indicators. The methodology employs an investigative approach with simple and low-cost materials, such as red cabbage and beetroot natural indicators, as well as everyday household products like bleach, soap, detergent, toothpaste, vinegar, diluted caustic soda, lemon juice, kefir, fermented milk, among others. As a result of this work, teachers can engage students in experimental activities, discussing the results in correlation with the theoretical aspects covered in the classroom. Thus, the investigative approach aims to promote more effective teaching and learning, making classes more engaging and motivating, while allowing students to view science through the lens of experimentation, a task of great relevance in the current educational context.
