History and discourse: perspectives and controversies
Abstract
History and Discourse: Perspectives and ControversiesAuthor of discourses that are produced, even today, mainly from other speeches, such a relationship, so intimate, is not free of tensions and controversies thatultimately call into question the very nature of the historian’s profession. Is Historyjust a well-seasoned nominalism, and its object only the echoes of almost inaudiblespeeches of yore? The aim of this paper is to characterize some of the perspectivesand specific issues in the relationship of the historian with discourses, considering,in particular, the one that is shaped like its first "profession of faith": don’t reducehistory to the text, denying its existence beyond discourse. Situating myself in thetransition from Antiquity to the Western High Middle Ages, and in the flux of ahistorical process marked by the phenomenon of the establishment and spread ofChristianity, I will discuss the historiographics controversies about the nature ofthe beliefs and practices denounced as pagans and fought by Church’s authorities.Would these be vigorous discursive traditions, but alien to any "materiality", asclaims a historiography’s strand of post-modern feature? Or actual manifestationswhich constitute, instead, the language and discourse as privileged levels of themanifestations of class struggle?
