Abstract

History and Discourse: Perspectives and ControversiesAuthor of discourses that are produced, even today, mainly from other speeches,such a relationship, so intimate, is not free of tensions and controversies thatultimately call into question the very nature of the historian’s profession. Is Historyjust a well-seasoned nominalism, and its object only the echoes of almost inaudiblespeeches of yore? The aim of this paper is to characterize some of the perspectivesand specific issues in the relationship of the historian with discourses, considering,in particular, the one that is shaped like its first "profession of faith": don’t reducehistory to the text, denying its existence beyond discourse. Situating myself in thetransition from Antiquity to the Western High Middle Ages, and in the flux of ahistorical process marked by the phenomenon of the establishment and spread ofChristianity, I will discuss the historiographics controversies about the nature ofthe beliefs and practices denounced as pagans and fought by Church’s authorities.Would these be vigorous discursive traditions, but alien to any "materiality", asclaims a historiography’s strand of post-modern feature? Or actual manifestationswhich constitute, instead, the language and discourse as privileged levels of themanifestations of class struggle?

Mário Jorge da Motta Bastos, Universidade Federal Fluminense
É Bacharel em História pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1989), Mestre em História Social pela Universidade Federal Fluminense (1995) e Doutor em História Social pela Universidade de São Paulo (2002). Atualmente, é Professor Associado I do Curso de Graduação em História da Universidade Federal Fluminense, onde atua também no Programa de Pós-Graduação, além de líder do "'Translatio Studii' - Núcleo Dimensões do Medievo", e pesquisador do "Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Estudos e Pesquisas sobre Marx e o Marxismo (NIEP-Marx)", grupos de pesquisa registrados junto ao CNPq. Principais linhas de pesquisa e de orientação: Economia, Religião e Sociedade na Idade Média Ocidental. Autor de vários artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais e estrangeiros, organizou livros dedicados à Idade Média e lançou, em 2009, pela EDUFF, o livro intitulado "O Poder nos Tempos da Peste (Portugal - Séculos XIV-XVI)". No mesmo ano, desenvolveu um Estágio de Pós-Doutorado na Universidade de São Paulo com pesquisa sobre o tema "Formas de Apropriação Material e Simbólica da Natureza na Alta Idade Média Ibérica".
