Progress, civilization and religion: Education´s multiple dimensions in Uberabinha MG Brazil, during the First Republic (1889-1930)
Abstract
The History of Education in Uberabinha MG Brazil, during the First Republic is investigated, so that, from this historical and educational trajectory and from the analysis and comprehension thereby, the connection between the regional and national study could be provided. The understanding of such dynamics will foreground the comparison and analysis of the educational facts and discussions in official documents, mainly from the City Hall registers, on the reports published in the local press and in the topics dealt with in specialized bibliography. While focusing on the organization of public teaching in Uberabinha, a map of the national public education is outlined.
Brazilian public education is put into practice in Uberabinha´s educational establishments reflecting contradictions, advances, retrogressions, ruptures and continuity. Education is dealt with as a general subject, coupled to issues related to the social-political-economic context of the research period under discussion, namely, civility and patriotism, order and progress, and religion aspects. The manner these issues were introduced in Brazilian reality and how they influenced the national and Uberabinha´s educational scenery may be identified.
