FAMILY MANCALA
AFRICAN GAMES POTENTIALITIES FOR DEVELOPING MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE
Abstract
This theoretical-based study focuses on reflecting on the decolonization of Eurocentric thinking about mathematics bringing as its object of analysis the African games of the Mancala family, since the school curriculum sporadically works on the relationship between Africanities and mathematics. In general terms, the aim of the text implies decolonizing Eurocentric thinking permeated by modern knowledge paradigms about the history of mathematics and discussing the potential of Mancala games. For this, based on content analysis, the text presents examples of epistemic racism in the history of mathematics in Brazil and historically underpins the importance of other points of view on the subject. As a proposal for teaching mathematics, the text addresses the Mancala Family games, specifically the Awalé Game. The discussions show that it is possible to work with the Mancala games on the four elementary operations: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, as well as arithmetic progression. The conclusions point out that the proposal presented in the article will be open to new potentials to be discovered through the traditional African games, accompanied by historical and dynamic foundations about African descent culture.
