RACISM AND MORALISM
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S RIGHT?
Abstract
This article is the result of an image analysis of two posters pasted to the wall of a school in Boston (USA), where they are displayed: one with a sentence and the image of Rosa Parks, and the other with a sentence by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, in addition of a title at the top. The objective was to understand the message implicit in the posters and how we can problematize it. For the production of meaning, the Critical Image Analysis method was used (AMORIM; KRESS, 2020), which consists of the analysis of an image through seven steps (first impressions, description, analysis, critical awareness, reasoning, connections and expressions) which comprise three mental operations: knowing, analyzing and relating the image from its simplest to the most complex aspects. It was possible to establish a connection of the phrases on the posters with universal ethics and the beauty of the world (FREIRE, 1996), decolonization and solidarity (GAZTAMBIDE-FERNÁNDEZ, 2019), in addition to anti-racist practice, in Almeida (2019) and morality, in Nietzsche (1998). We also use Castells (1999) to refute the way in which the image is communicated. The content of the image provokes reflections and calls us to (re)think racism and social inequalities.
