IMPLICATIONS ON BRAZILIAN EDUCATIONAL POLICIES OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR AUTISM IN THE DSM-5 AND ICD-11
Abstract
This paper aims to present and discuss the latest versions of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder 4 and 5) and the ICD (International Classification of Diseases 10 and 11), regarding the diagnostic of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their implications to the Brazilian educational policy towards this population. To achieve the objectives of this article, we used bibliographic research, of a qualitative and descriptive nature, in which we proposed discussions around five topics: the change on the diagnostic criteria; the classification of autism as a neurodevelopmental disorder; the exclusion of specific disorder subsets; the impact on clinic and educational treatments and the possibilities of educational services towards students with ASD.
