PERCEPTIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES OF PSYCHOLOGISTS WORKING IN PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY
Abstract
A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study that aimed to analyze the perceptions of working pediatric psycho-oncologists, on the processes and the results of psychosocial interventions used in the field. Five psychologists, who work with children and teenagers in a hospital environment, participated in a semi-structured scripted interview, in person or online. The obtained answers were categorized using Bardin’s content analysis. From the gathered answers, four categorized themes were created: working with families; working in a multi-professional team; evaluating the results of the interventions; and, professional challenges and benefits. The family were seen as allies, informants, or who receive emotional support, and psychosocial interventions. The psychologist’s role in a multi-professional team was highlighted as someone who stimulates integration, participates in interconsultation, a mediator, and someone who helps communicate bad news. The results of the psychosocial interventions were observed when psychological changes occurred on the child, through feedback, by using psychometric tests, and by a reduced number of requests to see the patient. Dealing with children in end of life, or who were resistant towards the psychologist, were examples of professional challenges faced by the participants. While the benefits were related to contributions, recognitions, and spiritual strengthening. It is important to emphasize the need for more qualitative investigations sobre o tema, and more discussion on the training implication of the psychologist.
