Abstract

This text introduces the dossier, which is a product of an exchange between Brazilian and Portuguese researchers, and intends to investigate the history of the teaching profession in the Portuguese-Brazilian world, in a longitudinal perspective, trying to understand it in a context characterized, on the one side, by the development of the modern State and, on the other side, by the institutionalization of the educational sciences. The project’s main reference is the interpretive model developed by Nóvoa (1987) and includes the analysis of a group of factors associated with the history of the teaching profession, seen from the point of view of comparative history. In the second part of the text, a first approximation of the educational-historic analyses of the project is outlined.
