Abstract

This study aimed to understand how the process of internationalization of two medium-sized companies occurred. Specifically, identify the strategies, motivations, facilitators, hinders, and benefits of this process. This is a descriptive-qualitative research that used case study strategy. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the directors of the two companies studied (Alpha and Beta). The interviews were transcribed and later analyzed through the technique of content analysis. The process of internationalization of the company Alfa occurred since the inception of the operations and of the company Beta occurred gradually. Both companies used exporting strategies. One aspect worth mentioning is the fact that the two companies performed FDI, greenfield-type. It should be noted that SMEs were not expected to have subsidiaries in other countries since the process of internationalization of Brazilian companies is still very recent.
