Spatial determination of the quantities and libertas philosophandi in the young Cassirer, interpreter of Descartes and Leibniz

The question of space in its modern version is returned in the central analysis of Cassirer, immediately following the Berlin period (1906-1919), but also in his writings of philosophical theory and philosophy from Dall’Umanesimo all’Illuminismo as the title of an Italian collection. This essay focuses on the references to Descartes and it examines his views on space and place, also considering the developments in Leibniz. I dont read Cassirer's extensive scientific production on the basis of a rigid pattern of continuity, but I intend to emphasize the commitment to combine theoretical and historical interest with a style of thought that does not always coincide with that of the Marburg School.
