Resumen

Bakathir's The Tragedy of Oedipus offers a compelling and innovative reinterpretation of Sophocles' classic Greek myth through an Islamic lens. By examining the play through an Islamic framework, Bakathir challenges traditional Western notions of fate, free will, and the nature of tragedy. He offers a new interpretation of the myth's universal elements by rejecting the conventional Greek understanding of humanity as mere pawns of fate. The analysis focuses on corrupt religious leaders, divine justice, free will, and fate, and addresses contemporary issues of religious hypocrisy, unchecked power, and socioeconomic inequality. By doing so, he aims to break down cultural barriers and significantly contribute to Arabic and international literature. Bakathir effectively preserves the core ideas of the original tragedy while enriching them with Islamic morality, fostering a more comprehensive discourse of the human experience. This study utilizes a multifaceted framework integrating elements from Adaptation, Cultural Translation, Intertextuality, Religious Discourse, and cultural criticism to provide a nuanced understanding of Bakathir's Islamic reinterpretation of the myth. Eventually, readers find themselves forced to reconsider their ideas and preconceptions, considering Bakathir 's scathing indictment of religious hypocrisy.
