Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to analyze teachers' perception in relation to the concept of being a good teacher. Physical education teachers, working with primary school (1st to 8th Grade) in public state schools of the municipality of Maringá-Pr, participated in the study. The investigation was characterized as a report case of qualitative nature. Six teachers who had accomplished their initial formation in a public institution in the state of Paraná, but at different moments, thus having a formation based on different program designs were selected for the study. Class observation and semi-structured interviews were accomplished with the teachers selected. Results showed that according to the participants' perspective, there are some essential characteristics, so that the teacher can be considered a good teacher. Such characteristics were defined as follows: having a real taste for the profession, researching the own pedagogic practice, the good examples of old teachers to be used as models, the mission of educating, to be open to changes, setting personal goals to be achieved at short and long-term, sharing experiences with other teachers, planning classes appropriately and working in a collective way.
