Prevalence and sociodemographic factors associated with the sedentary behavior in adolescents of the Rio Claro-SP
Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence, sociodemographic factors and situations of sedentary behavior (SB) associated SB situations (1) obligations; 2) computer / tablet and video game; 3) smartphone; 4) television); 5) SB total) with adolescents from Rio Claro-SP. Participated in the study 482 adolescents (14.4 ± 2.1 years) recruited from 3 public and 2 private schools, evaluated by questionnaires that included: sociodemographic, clinical anamnesis and socioeconomic information; Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire, with additional questions related to SB and the use of smartphones and video games; a Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents and; had their weight and height objectively measured for the calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg/m²). Descriptive statistics, independent t test to compare the situations of SB and level of physical activity between boys and girls; as well as a logistic regression to verify the association of variables with total SB was employed (p<.05). It was observed that 47.5% of the population spent more than 14 hours/day in SB (mean13.7±3.4 hours/day). The situations associated with total SB were: smartphone (OR = 6.23; p < 0.001); computer / tablet and videogame (OR = 2.5; p = 0.012); obligations (OR = 2.43, p = 0.009) and television (RO = 2.35, p = 0.009). There was a high prevalence of SB, but there was no sociodemographic factor associated with this behavior. Additionally, the use of the smartphone presented greater association with the high total SB time.
