Abstract

This study compared the resting heart rate, the maximum heart rate, the sub maximum heart rate (HRsub) and the heart rate reserve in dry land and in the water. Incremental tests were performed on dry land and in the water in eighteen subjects. The treadmill test started at a speed of 6 km.h-1, with a one km.h-1 increment every two minutes and in the water cadence started at 40 strides per minute (spm) and had increments of 10 spm. The resting HR in immersion and dry land were similar. The averages of the maximum HR, HR reserve, HRsub and %HR reserve in the water were lower than in the treadmill in the entire group. No significant differences were identified among HRsub and %HR reserve in the male group. The sub maximal HR and %HR reserve were lower in the female group. These results suggest that the HR determined by the method of reserve must consider the environment where the exercise will be performed.
