Abstract

The main goal of this article is to analyze the foundations and social function of the proposal of "education for active citizenship" in the educational field, as a proposal linked to the political perspective of the third route. The discussion is guided by three central concepts: a new democratic state, active civil society and active citizenship. The results show that the proposal of education for active citizenship is part of the strategies of dissemination of ethical and moral values that favor the construction of a new consensus on the behavior patterns appropriate to the new form of sociability necessary for capitalist reproduction, based on the expansion of social participation and greater accountability of individuals for the solution of social problems.
