Abstract

This work is part of a broader inquiry about discursivities around training physical education teachers in Uruguay (1974-1948). From some theoretical involvement of the french discourse analysis (Pecheux, 1990), addresses the texts written by Jess T. Hopkins concerning the institutionalization of physical education in Uruguay, during their stay in the country between 1912 and 1927. It shows how, with the advent of the association of the Young Men Christian Asociation (YMCA) to Uruguay, certain encumbrances happened that afected the education of the body leading to considerate more important sports development than the gymnastics and to introduce the voluntary work through leaders. Throughout the work it showns a discursivity that synthesizes the normalism, characteristic of training teachers, and the technicist and professionalist, characteristic of "physical director" programs of American universities of the YMCA.
