A INSTRUÇÃO PRIMÁRIA NO BRASIL ENTRE A INDEPENDÊNCIA E O ATO ADICIONAL DE 1834

Abstract

The theme of primary education in the early stage of the Brazilian nation still needs further study, as its knowledge is relevant to understand the process of organizing national education. During this period we had our first constitution, the first general law on public education, and the approval of the Additional Act of 1834, which decentralized state actions on public education. In this sense the purpose of this text is to analyze the actions of the State, aiming to organize and disseminate the primary public education, in the period. Given the historical conditions of the time, how important is instruction? What did factors favor and/or limit their diffusion? To answer these questions, we made an interpretative analysis from the period documentation and some studies produced on education in the period. We conclude that the diffusion of primary public education encountered numerous economic, social and human difficulties, since it was not yet imposed as a basic need of the population.
