The emergence of primary teacher training schools in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century: the teacher training schools of Rio de Janeiro and of Campos

Abstract

This text is the first result of research on the history of the teaching profession in Brazil, focusing on the state of Rio de Janeiro. The object of study is the implementation of two institutionalized centers of teacher education: the teacher training school of the court, in 1880, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, at that time the capital of the country, and the teacher training school of Campos, in the northern part of the state, created in 1894, at the beginning of the republican period. In this historical context, the process of modernizing the country demanded the proliferation of new ideas and an emphasis on instruction and popular education, motor forces that stand out in the construction of a civilized nation. As a consequence, investment in teaching education acquires central importance.
