Abstract

We analyzed the stage of nanotechnology research and development applied to water treatment (nano-water), aiming to make water potable, desalting, and decontamination of water courses in Brazil. We review data provided by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation on research with public funding from 2004 to 2012, and data from the research groups listed by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. Most of the research on nano-water refers to water remediation, which shows the potentiality for decontamination of important water courses, a significant Brazilian health problem. There is indeed enough infrastructure and human resources for the implementation of a public policy aimed to solve water problems for people with difficulties in access, from the application of specific nanotechnologies. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a solid public policy accompanying the development of new technologies with studies on the potential risks associated, which raises uncertainties on the sustainability of applying nanotechnologies.
