Abstract

This article deals with the concept of freedom (eleuthería) within the context of the Greek philosophical literature developed by Plato and Aristotle. The freedom referred in here is not derived only from the right or from the law, but also from the economics. It was, above all, the economic status that guaranteed free time for the citizen to take care of himself, of his own education and of the civic interests from the polis.

Miguel Spinelli

ResumoNascido em Paz de Macucos, Getulina (11/08/1951), SP, possui graduação em Estudos Sociais (com licenciatura em História) pela Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Lorena, SP (1973), graduação em Filosofia pela Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Lorena (1974), graduação em Teologia pela Pontifícia Universidade Gregoriana, Roma (1977), mestrado em Filosofia pela Pontifícia Universidade Santo Tomás, Roma (1978) e doutorado também em Filosofia pela mesma Pontifícia Universidade Santo Tomás (1980) com diploma revalidado pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). A tese de doutorado foi elaborada com bolsa da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (em Lisboa) e apoio da Faculdade de Filosofia de Braga (Portugal), na qual lecionei em dois semestres letivos (2º de 1979 e 1º de 1980). Em setembro de 1980 fui contratado como Professor Titular Visitante na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS, Departamento de Filosofia, no qual me dediquei ao lecionamento, orientação e pesquisa por 36 anos consecutivos, até o final do semestre de 2016. Atualmente, a partir de 2017, estou como professor colaborador aposentado do Departamento de Filosofia. Ãrea de atuação: História da Filosofia Antiga, Medieval e Moderna; temas: conhecimento, ética e política.
