Abstract

The degree of “Doctor in Mathematical Sciences” was instituted in Brazil by Decree no. 140, in March 9th 1842. The decree approved the statutes of the Rio de Janeiro Military Academy, and contained 22 articles which dealt mainly with the Institution’s course structure; article 19 actually established the mentioned degree. In addition to describing the initial procedures of the first doctorate graduates, the present article outlines the path of student and professor Gabriel Militão Villanova Machado, which gives a glimpse into the academic setting of the time.
