<b>The visibility of ecological disasters in the 21th century: a review of Downs’ ‘issue-attention cycle’
Abstract
This paper aims to investigate how Anthony’s Down issue-attention cycle, proposed in 1972, can contribute to the current debate regarding the tripartite politics-media-environment. In order to achieve the proposed objectives of articulating a revision of the issue attention cycle theory and of ascertaining the pertinence of the cycle with regard to the media attention given to ecological issues in this century, this paper unfolds in three parts, starting with the revision of the original work of Downs, followed by a national and international literature review, ending with a proposal for a rereading of the ‘cycle’. In the end, it is hoped that this research will contribute to the consolidation of an environmental concern effectively policy, aimed at our common future.
