Abstract

In this article, we discuss the importance of Terminology in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in the Health’s context, presenting differences between terminologies in oral and sign languages. The study that we present is the result of research carried out at the Federal University of Roraima, as a Conclusion Course Research, which aimed to suggest specific sign-terms in the area of Health at Boa Vista’s context, capital of Roraima. The theoretical basis we use makes use of studies focused on the areas of Terminology in Sign Languages, emphasizing term signs, as advocated, for example, by Prometi and Costa (2018), among other authors. The research was motivated by the lack of sign-terms or specific signs in the area of Health, in particular for deaf people at the Basic Health Unit named ‘Buritis’. For this, a health professional, interviewed by us, who has specific knowledge of the concepts worked on, together with four deaf people – responsible for creating the sign-terms – were interviewed, which made it possible to analyze and record the aforementioned signs.
