Abstract
This article reports the history and trajectory of capoeira, which was recognized as Immaterial Cultural Patrimony of Brazil on July 2008 by IPHAN - The National Institute of Historic and Artistic Patrimony -, through the register of Rodas of Capoeira in the Book of Forms of Expression and of Art of Capoeira Masters in the Book of Knowledges. The origin of the capoeira has still been an incognito, but it is known that its development occurred in Brazilian ground since the Colonial period. Its practice as a predominantly urban characteristic was present mainly in Rio de Janeiro and some Brazilian metropolises, usually port cities. Present in several Brazilian political and social events, it suffered strong repression with the advent of the Republic, and also great transformations in the intense process of "sportivization" and institutionalization, followed by the expansion of its practice in Brazil and in the world.Downloads
