Abstract
The present study´s aim was to identify how the practice of straight line horse races was constituted in the city of Porto Alegre, in the second half of the 19th century. Data was collected in printed sources; such as the catalogue of Revista do Globo, records and a remembrance book of Jockey Club do Rio Grande do Sul. The city presented a scenery of urban development in the half of the XIX century. In this context, the maintenance of the old passion of Rio Grande do Sul’s people was searched: the horse races. Even before the opening of the first hippodrome, lots of disputes took place in the suburbs of Porto Alegre. As the hippodromes were being created, straight line horse races started losing space in the city. Straight line horse races, possibly, constituted an equestrian sportive practice able to evidence a development of the horse races simultaneous to the slow, but constant, modernization process of the city and its population.Downloads
