Abstract

The coach's concern in organizing a training so as to provide the athlete a great adaptable answer, taking into consideration the objectives previously defined, has been the target desired since the 60th decade. Considering the importance of the training’s plan, this study aimed at analyzing the influence of the linear and non-linear models of periodization applied to the weight training concerning the increase of the lean body mass. The study was characterized as an almost-experimental research. The sample embraced eight men who had an intermediate training level, divided in two experimental groups. Group 1 performed the training based on either the linear or stable model (without overload variation from one week to the other), and Group 2 accomplished the training based on the non-linear model (with overload variation from one week to the other), both during an eight week period. For data collecting a tape measure was used for the anthropometric measurement of the circumferences, a Filizola weighting-machine for observing the weight, and a Cescorf’s skin fold caliper for measuring the skin thickness folds used in the estimation of the body composition. The pre and post tests of both groups were compared using Student’s t test to a 5% significance level (p < or =0,05). Analyzing the results obtained concerning the posttest comparison between Group 1 and Group 2, it can be concluded that there were not statistically significant differences, however, Group 2, based on the weight training non-linear model, obtained a statistically significant increase in the lean body mass, comparing its pre and posttests, making us believe that the structuring of the periodization using that model is an effective and safe form for its application into the weight-training when searching for muscular hypertrophy.
