Soccer: cultural manifestation and ideology

Abstract

In Brazil soccer has assumed a role beyond a simple sports modality by becoming a social phenomenon. Historically soccer is perceptible from two different perspectives: as a means of transmitting ideology and as an important element of Brazilian culture. The aim of this bibliographical study is to discuss soccer as a cultural manifestation and, at some historical moments, as a mean of transmitting ideology. This discussion made it possible to notice that soccer provides subsidies for a better understanding of organizational and relational forms that permeate Brazilian society.
