Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of movement velocity on torque production during eccentric muscle actions. Twenty physically active subjects, not enrolled in strength training were randomly assigned to either a low or high velocity eccentric exercise group (Ecc20 or Ecc210 respectively). Maximal isometric torque (knee extension on an isokinetic dynamometer) was assessed on their first visit to the laboratory and used as ranking criteria for the randomization process. Maximal voluntary eccentric contraction was assessed in the next session. Eight maximal eccentric muscle actions were performed at either 20°•s-1 or 210°•s-1 and their best result was considered for statistical analysis. A two way ANOVA was performed and no significant differences were found between groups for isometric torque (Ecc20= 335.5 65.60; Ecc210= 314.0 62.68) indicating an appropriate subjects’ randomization. No differences were found for eccentric torque between groups (Exc20= 376.9 60.19; Exc210= 367.0 58.89). For both groups, absolute and relative eccentric torque was significantly higher than isometric torque (p<0.05). Our results indicate that movement velocity does not affect torque production during eccentric muscle actions.Downloads
