Abstract

This paper analyses Gilberto Freyre´s texts regarding soccer. It is noted that the writer used this cultural element to reassure his thesis on the perfect racial integration model in Brazil. Because Freyre did not have enough knowledge about soccer, he recruited several intellectuals – such as José Lins do Rego and, specially, Mario Filho – to write about this sport in Brazil and therefore confirm his theoretical model.

André Mendes Capraro, UFPR
Possui graduação em Educação Física pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1997), graduação em Psicologia pela Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná (1999), mestrado em História pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (2002) e doutorado em História pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (2007). Atualmente é parecerista da Revista Acadêmica Multidisciplinar Urutágua (UEM), professor adjunto do Centro Universitário Positivo (onde também exerce o cargo diretivo de supervisor do Centro Esportivo) e avaliador de curso de graduação (SINAES). Tem experiência na área de Educação Física, com ênfase na relação entre Ciências Sociais e o Esporte.
