Presentation brief
Photography is an important tool for preserving memory and writing history. It stands against the erasure of the memory of domination and bears witness to struggles of resistance. In historical research, photography was a late addition to the arsenal of documents used by historians. At the beginning of the 20th century, History benefited from the expansion of the concept of source, to which historians such as Marc Bloch, Lucien Febvre, Jacques Le Goff, among others, contributed. To this end, this dossier aims to include contributions from researchers who use photography as a research source in the History of Education, addressing, through this source, different segments, such as: school institutions, school practices, school culture, material culture, childhood, among other themes relevant to the area.
Profile of expected contributions
Contributions should establish an interface with the following thematic axes:
- Conceptual and methodological issues in the analysis and interpretation of photographic images in the History of Education;
- Photography and Collections in History of Education;
- Photography and History of Educational Institutions;
- Photographs and school life;
- Photographs and school material culture;
- Photographs and History of Education in non-formal spaces.
Deadlines
- Public notice: 09/16/2024.
- Submissions: from 10/01/2024 to 01/31/2025. Only texts submitted until 01/31/2025 will be evaluated for the composition of the dossier.
- Schedule: the dossier will be published in issue no. 25 (2025), and it is estimated for the second half of 2025.
Submissions
- The article must be submitted individually, by registering with RBHE, through the link http://periodicos.uem.br/ojs/index.php/rbhe/login .
- Articles must strictly follow the RBHE submission guidelines. The guidelines for authors are available at http://periodicos.uem.br/ojs/index.php/rbhe/about/submissions . Non-standard articles will be automatically rejected.
- The person responsible for posting the article must select the “Dossier” section at the time of submission. In addition, the following information will be included in the Note to the Editor (this item will appear during the submission process): “Text related to the thematic dossier “Photography as a research source for the History of Education”.
- Articles must be original and unpublished. They cannot be submitted simultaneously in another journal. Each author may submit only one text for this call.
- The person responsible for posting the article must include as a Supplementary Document (the item will appear during the submission process): cover page, with title of the work and complete data of all authors in the following order: name, complete institutional affiliation (in full and acronym), latest education, city, state, email, short CV and ORCID.
- The submission of articles by dossier proponents is prohibited.
- Each author may only have one text of the same format in progress at RBHE between submission and publication. In the case of articles, a two-year interval must be observed between publication and a new submission of a text by the same author, whether as the main author or co-author, in a continuous flow or in a dossier.
The process of evaluating and reviewing articles
Articles will individually undergo the following evaluation process:
- Format analysis: at this stage, the articles will be submitted for reading by the dossier organizers and evaluated for their suitability to the general criteria of the Brazilian Journal of History of Education and the submission standards available at: http://periodicos.uem.br/ojs/index.php/rbhe/about/submissions . If they do not meet the requirements, the dossier organizers themselves will reject articles that fall into one or more of the following situations:
- They are configured solely as a bibliographic review, or as an excerpt from a dissertation or thesis, without due adaptation;
- Are outside the scope of the dossier;
- They do not present an in-depth analysis of the topic they propose to discuss;
- Have serious writing and text structuring errors;
- They are merely descriptive and do not present an analysis of the problem;
- They are not in accordance with the scientific article genre;
- They do not comply with other rules of the Brazilian Journal of History of Education, available at: http://periodicos.uem.br/ojs/index.php/rbhe/about/submissions .
Blind peer review for merit and final editor's decision
In this second phase, the journal forwards the article, without identifying the author, for evaluation by at least two reviewers in the thematic area. The reviewers may accept the article in its entirety, request reformulations or reject it. These decisions are made through analytical opinions.
In order for the editor to issue a final opinion, at least two opinions are required. When one or two reviewers request reformulation, the article is returned to the author so that he or she can make the reformulations; if they are rejected by the editor, this means that a complete restructure of the manuscript was required.
When the author resubmits the revised text, it is re-evaluated and moves on to the final stage. In this stage, the editors responsible can approve or reject the submission, even if the ad hoc opinions are favorable, since the final decision rests with the editors.
Review and adaptation of the work to RBHE standards:
Once approved, the article undergoes language review and standardization. If necessary, the article is sent to the author for corrections and adjustments before finally being formatted and sent for publication.
Articles that will compose the dossier
The dossier to be published will include a diversity of authors, institutions and regions of the country and abroad. It will consist of up to six articles. Texts that are rejected due to the limit of texts in the dossier may, if the author is interested, undergo a new round of peer review, under the responsibility of one of the associate editors, and will be published in the continuous flow in case of final approval.
The internationalization policy
At least one article must be written by an author(s) affiliated with a foreign institution. Cases of co-authorship between researchers based in Brazilian and foreign research institutions will be considered as authors based in Brazil. All articles must be translated into English, with the translation being paid for by the authors. Only translations accompanied by a declaration of execution by the responsible professional will be accepted.
Important: Translations should only be requested after the Portuguese and technical standards review stages have been completed, upon notification from RBHE. Therefore, it is not necessary to submit the text in two languages.
