Abstract

This work was done from an approach between educational history and other demographic studies about Minas Gerais, mainly those which treat the issues related to families. The material used for research is a range of nominative lists of inhabitants which constitute a documental search (sensus) that comes from some temptations to count the Minas Gerais population in the 1830s. This documentation was used as the main source to build a classification of householders who have children in the elementary schools allowing, in this way, the description of those house units from the aspect of their posses of slaves, the main occupation of the family head and their family groups composition, too. It also aims to highlight the behavior of specific segments of the population that were linked to the schools, among them highlights the group constituted by free black people and women who were the main head of the family.
