Abstract

In order to contribute to the comprehension of the history of the education of elementary school teachers in Brazil, especially of literacy teachers, they are presented in this paper the results of the research developed through the textual configuration analysis of the 1940’s manual Práticas escolares (School practices), published by Saraiva Editors and written by Antônio d’Ávila, an educator from São Paulo State, Brazil. In the analysis of this manual, where chapters referring to teaching of reading and writing are also included, there is a synthesis of knowledges and practices mostly derived from the New School Ideals and that were considered necessary for future teachers to be able to exercise, with efficiency and success, their activities in the elementary school, especially those referring to the teaching of reading and writing.
